It is also regarded as the World’s Capital of Music due in part to the fact that Mozart, Beethoven, and Johann Straus called Vienna home. Vienna is located in the middle of Europe making smelting-pot for travelers from all over the world.

Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia, located on the border of Slovakia and Vienna. It is the largest city in Slovakia with 450,000 people which still makes it one of the smallest capital cities in Europe. Bratislava is the definition of an up-and-coming city because of its growing number of young residents.

It seems to be the point where Western Europe meets Eastern Europe which makes it a very unique city to visit. It is also much cheaper than Vienna which is only 60km away.

Places to See

Vienna

Schonbrunn Palace was the main summer residence for the Habsburg rulers. It has been open to tourists since the 1950s.

The Hofburg used to be the imperial residence of the Hofburg rulers. It is now the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the biggest churches in Vienna and is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna.

Belvedere Palace is another large palace in Vienna. It is known for its beautiful gardens.

Bratislava

Bratislava Castle is a large castle overlooking the city and the Danube River.

Devin Castle is just outside of the city. It was destroyed by Napoleon’s army in 1809.

Food

Vienna

One of Austria’s most famous dishes is Wiener Schnitzel. Wiener Schnitzel is breaded veal that is pan-fried in butter. Vienna Sausages are also known around the world. Vienna Sausages are traditionally made using pork and beef stuffed into sheep’s intestines. When it comes to desserts, Apfelstrudel or apple strudel, is one of the most popular tasty treats to get in Vienna.

Bratislava

Soup has always played a large part in Slovakian culture. Big bowls made of bread and filled with various types of soup are very popular here. Slovak dumplings are also staples in the diets of the Slovakian people. Most of the time the main dish for a meal here is meat because the culture here seems to revolve heavily on meats. Flag Ship is one of Europe’s largest restaurants and is definitely worth trying if you are in town.

Getting Around

Vienna

Vienna is known for having a great network of public transportation with the subway, train, tram, and bus systems. Some of Vienna’s biggest attractions are on the outskirts of the city so you will want to use public transportation during your time here. It all runs on the honor system so there are no ticket barriers on any form of transportation. Though it runs off the honor system, you should buy a ticket because random ticket checks are common and you could get a hefty fine without a ticket.

Bratislava

Bratislava is a pretty compact city with most of the attractions being within the Old Town. You probably won’t even need to take public transportation unless you want to see Devin Castle or the Soviet War Memorial. If you do want to take public transportation, all you need to do is buy a ticket at the bus stop and punch in once you get on the bus. Though Devin Castle is out of town, the city bus system will take you all the way there and back.

Nightlife

Vienna

Vienna was ranked as one of the best cities in the world for young adults so it is no wonder there is a thriving nightlife scene here. There are also over 200,000 university students in Vienna which ensures that the nightlife is alive and well. There are many bars here that have live music every night of the week. There are also quite a few clubs to choose from. Two of the best clubs are Volksgarten and Grelle Forelle.

Bratislava

Bratislava has a pretty good night scene for being a smaller city. Because there most of the bars and clubs are in the Old Town, walking everywhere is extremely easy. There are many smaller bars scattered around the Old Town. There are also quite a few clubs you can try if you want to dance. The Club is by far the biggest club in the city because the other clubs are on the smaller end of the spectrum.

Melk Abbey is a large Benedictine abbey that is perched on top of a hill in Melk. It is roughly 50 minutes from Vienna.

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. The city is only an hour away from Vienna and would be excellent for exploring for a day or two.

Vienna and Bratislava offer very different experiences. Both cities are excellent to explore. Vienna is much larger than Bratislava so you will want more time to explore it. You can see most of the main sights in Bratislava in a day or two. If you have more time, you should definitely go to Vienna. If you only have one night to spare, Vienna might be a bit overwhelming. Obviously, both cities are worth visiting if you have the time to do so.
